32 - Plaque
The trail guide mentions a plaque on a rock with the mysterious inscription: " In memorium to Arthur Farnsworth. The Keeper of Stray Ladies. Pecketts 1939. Presented by a Grateful One. " The location on the trail map is vague at best and an image hints that it is located at the waters edge. When we get to the likely area we bushwack carefully along the side of the brook seeking the plaque. We finally locate it and it is indeed right at waters edge and visible only when nearly on top of it. The plaque is attributed to Bette Davis who came to the area early in her career. While staying at Peckett's she met the assistant manager, Arthur Farnsworth, and was much taken with him. Legend has it that she deliberately wandered off from a hiking party knowing full well that Arthur would bear the task of finding her. Bette and Arthur were married in 1940 but tragedy overtook them with Arthurs death in 1943. Two weeks after suffering a head injury as a result of falling down the stairs at Butternut Farnsworth collapsed on a Hollywood sidewalk. He died a few days later. After Arthurs death her visits to the area wained and about 20 years after she first came to the town and Butternut was sold the plaque appeared on the boulder. |
