Mt Greylock - North West Massachusetts |
|
The Weather Channel hinted at rain and late thunderstorms. It was raining at 7am. Undetered we left Chicopee at 8am determined to hike something, even if it was a short hop to a waterfall in the rain. Destination - Mount Greylock, the highest elevation in Massachusetts at 3,491 ft.
It stays dry on the drive down but the sky remained ominously grey and there was a stiff breeze blowing. We decided to push on with the original plan for a seven mile (or so) loop. Starting at the Jones Nose trail head to meet the Appalachian Trail on Saddle Ball Mountain (3,238 ft) then along the ridge to the summit of Mount Greylock. Our return was to be via a short backtrack off the summit then taking the Hopper Trail and Deer Hill Trail to Sperry Rd where we would cross the vehicular access road to the summit, Rockwell Road, to the CCC Dynamite Trail and pick up the Jones Nose trail again about a half mile from our start point. I snap away like crazy which is just as well because I am still having trouble getting good macro shots in low light with the new camera. It's not the cameras fault, I need to work harder at learning how to use it. It is frustrating though to return home to find images that look great on the camera screen are fuzzy when brought up to scale. Enough babble for now, read on for more... |
