The first time I climbed to Mt Holyoke from the dirt road just off Rte 47 I came to an area of ledge that corresponded with the name 'Titan's Piazza' on the trail map. My understanding of a Piazza being that of an Italian town square - an open, paved meeting place - I made the connection and described images of the place as such. Recently however someone corrected me saying that Titan's Piazza was in fact an overhanging outcropping of basalt lava columns on the cliff face below the ledges.

A little investigation on the web turned up an excellent web site by the Friends of the Mount Holyoke Range (FOMHR). The site does have rather annoying pop out sidebar link frames from the hosting company but is notheless an excellent resource for the history of the Holyoke Range.

Spurred by curiosity, and to set the record straight, a mission was born - Find Titan's Piazza!
